Let’s be real, the only way to adequately combat the heat is to eat lots of ice cream. Here at EatingNYC, we believe that the day just isn’t complete without a little something sweet. For those of you looking for a little adventure, keeping reading to learn about some of the most creative flavors we’ve seen at our favorite scoop shops.
Ample Hills Creamery
Ample Hills was born out of the famous Walt Whitman who wrote in a poem about the “Brooklyn of Ample Hills.” Founders Brian and Jackie opened the first store in Brooklyn as new entrepreneurs and parents, but little did they know that their Munchies ice cream – a pretzel infused ice cream with ritz crackers, potato chips, pretzels and m&ms – would soon become one of NYC’s most talked about creamy-creations.
Morgenstern’s
Founded by Nicholas Morganstern a former Gramercy Tavern and Daniel pastry chef, Morgenstern’s serves fine ice cream with each flavor carefully crafted and made by hand. Oddballs here include Black Licorice and Salt and Pepper Pinenut, but don’t let that intimidate you, because they also offer classics like Madagascar Vanilla or Chocolate.
Stuffed Ice Cream
New York natives Jackie and Alan are two friends with a passion for sweets and the masterminds behind Stuffed Ice Cream. At their East Village shop, they’re most famous for the cruff, a glazed donut stuffed with fresh ice cream – both of which are made in house. Their most interesting flavors include White Chocolate Lavender and Royal Milk Tea.
Il Laboratorio del Gelato
Il Laboratorio del Gelato is a custom lab of gelato making, providing gelato to restaurants all over the city. Our go-to’s here are the green tea and malt but you can also find flavors like Cheddar Cheese and Roasted Cashew.
Ice & Vice
PC: @newyorkscoopsIce & Vice is an experimental ice cream shop that was made popular at outdoor markets. We love their insanely complex and crazy flavor combos like Opium Den: white sesame, toasted poppy seed, and lemon bread crouton. If you’re extra hungry, add a piece of their Detention Ice Cream Pie on top of your ice cream with malted vanilla ice cream and fruity pebble crust.
OddFellows
OddFellows began in Williamsburg and since then has expanded to the East Village and most recently on East Houston Street with a new concept, Coffee and Cream. As the name might suggest, they’re known for their innovative and often savory flavors like Avocado and Maple Bacon Pecan.
Van Leeuwen
PC: @vanleeuwenVan Leeuwen began as a food truck back in 2008 and serves both regular and some of the best vegan ice cream in the city. All of their ice cream is made in Greenpoint and delivered fresh daily to all of their locations around New York. We love their classics but if you’re feeling adventurous, go for their Earl Grey Tea – it’s uniquely refreshing and totally delicious.
