Is there anything better than waking up late on the weekends and going out to brunch with friends? Yeah, actually. It’s doing that but with the addition of a big stack of pancakes. Pancakes are seemingly everywhere in NYC nowadays and here are some of our favorite places to get them:
Clinton Street Baking Company
Blueberry pancakes from Clinton St. Baking. PC: GrateNewsClinton St.’s blueberry pancakes are probably the most renowned and difficult to get pancakes in the city — i.e. expect a *long* wait on the weekends. You really can’t go wrong with any of their pancake offerings — the wild Maine blueberry, banana walnut, and chocolate chunk pancakes are all scrumptious and, believe it or not, actually worth the ridiculous wait times. A lesser-known pancake hack: they do serve breakfast for dinner — all the pancake offerings included — so if you don’t want to wait for brunch, head here before 11PM to snag what New York Magazine voted the “Best Pancakes” in NYC.
Le Coucou
The Comme un clafoutis from Le Coucou. PC: Corry ArnoldThere’s little that’s better for breakfast than a Comme un clafoutis, a french pancake. Served with fruit on top, as opposed to baked in, and a generous dollop of creme fraiche, this thin and buttery pastry-like baked dish will make you want to come back daily.
Sunday in Brooklyn
Malted pancakes from Sunday in Brooklyn. PC: Rachel Vanni/Tasting TableThis American restaurant — which has a marketplace, bar, upstairs dining room, AND a garden — serves up some of the best and biggest pancakes in the city. The “Malted Pancakes” with hazelnut maple praline and brown butter are on their brunch menu, which is available from 10am-3:30pm.
Maialino
Ricotta pancakes from Maialino. PC: MaialinoMaialino, Danny Meyer’s Roman endeavor in the Gramercy Park Hotel, serves up two of the fluffiest and thickest ricotta pancakes in town. They’re perfectly round and a burnt, golden brown color that’s extremely tantalizing. We’ll even go on a limb here and say that maple syrup actually may not be necessary for these ones.
Shopsin’s
Mac’n cheese pancakes from Shopsin’s. PC: Jed EganWith over 70 different variations on pancakes — yep, 70 — Shopsin’s will surely have an option for even the pickiest of pancake eaters. Ranging from mac’n cheese to matzoh brei to Slutty Stuffed Pancakes, this Lower East Side diner is perfect for corralling all of your friends and having a pancake feast.
Five Leaves
Ricotta pancakes from Five Leaves. PC: The New PotatoWho doesn’t love a good ‘ole heaping pile of ricotta pancakes? We certainly do! Five Leaves, an uber-chill Greenpoint eatery, has some delicious ones served with honeycomb butter, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and 100% pure maple syrup. Make sure you’re hungry because this truly is an eye-widening stack of pancakes.
Locanda Verde
Lemon ricotta pancakes from Locanda Verde. PC: Food SpottingIt’s always a pleasant surprise when some of the best pancakes are churned out of a casual, neighborhood rustic Italian spot. In Tribeca, Locanda Verde is precisely that. Their “Lemon Ricotta Pancakes” with blueberries and meyer lemon curd are a fresh and light take on the breakfast/brunch food. The meyer lemon curd adds tartness while the blueberries are a welcomed texture difference from the immensely fluffy pancakes.
Bubby’s
Banana nut pancakes from Bubby’s. PC: TimeOutBubby’s, a Tribeca institution, is known for its comfort food — pancakes included. On their breakfast menu, available from 8am-11am daily, they serve up two different pancake styles, five different ways. There’s the “James Beard” — sour cream pancakes inspired by a recipe by James Beard — and “Sourdough”, which can be served with “Banana Nut,” “Blueberry,” “Chocolate Chip,” “Fried Chicken,” or “Nutella.” Bring a group of friends and order one of each, trust us. Or just a bunch of orders of the blueberry sourdough pancakes.
