We’re all about Jewish comfort food, especially matzo ball soup and especially around this time of the year. So, it seems only fitting that we round up our favorite renditions in d NYC, from the super classic simple and classic soup at Barney Greengrass, to a modern take at Shalom Japan, here are eight great Matzo ball soups.
2nd Avenue Deli

The super light and fluffy matzo ball, tender carrots, fresh dill, and tiny little square shaped pastas make this soup incredibly classic and delicious.
Frankel’s
PC: grubstreet.comFrankel’s is a contemporary delicatessen and appetizing shop in Greenpoint brought to us by two born and raised New Yorkers. Here, you’ll find a great bagel and schmear, crispy latkes and you guessed it: an awesome matzo ball soup. The matzoh ball is tender but has some texture, the carrots are soft but have a bite and the broth is salty but not too salty, making this soup just right! See what we did there?
Barney Greengrass
PC: @majushkiniUpper West Side favorite Barney Greengrass is a Jewish style appetizing spot known for their amazing smoked fishes, latkes, matzo brei and of course, great matzo ball soup. So good, that we usually ask for an extra matzoh ball with our order. Pro Tip: Barney Greengrass is cash only, so make sure to come prepared.
Ben’s Kosher Deli
PC: @bensdeliBen’s Kosher Deli is a longtime staple when it comes to New York Delis. Here, the matzoh ball soup is called“Grandma’s soup” and it’s filled with chicken, soft carrots and egg noodles, with the option of adding one very delicious matzoh ball. This soup is more of a chicken noodle and matzo ball soup blend, and we’re all about it.
Katz’s

The comforting flavors of matzoh ball soup combined with the rich umami of chicken ramen plus salty nori and a soft boiled egg makes for a magical bowl of goodness.
Russ and Daughters
PC: @russanddaughtersNew York establishment Russ & Daughters Cafe serves up a great matzoh ball soup at both their LES and UES location at The Jewish Museum. We may have waited nearly 100 years for them to get on the matzoh ball soup game, but we’re really glad they did.
