With all of the chaos in the world right now, we’re finding comfort in thinking about our favorite dishes, one of them being steak frites. This all time classic is one we can try to make at home and maybe even order in, but here’s a list to hold on to featuring our all time favorite renditions of the dish. Keep reading and start dreaming!
Frenchette
Photo: @savorysweetliveLee Hanson and Riad Nasr’s Frenchette in Tribeca serves a phenomenal twist of this classic French dish: duck frites. Think perfectly sliced duck breast with crispy skin, tender meat, and of course classic fries. If you’re looking for a slightly more adventurous but just as delicious version of steak frites, Frenchette is your move.
L’entrecote
Photo: @lerelaisdeveniseofficialL’entrecote is an iconic French staple that does one thing and one thing really well: steak frites. For $31.95, you’ll enjoy a green salad and two servings of ridiculously delicious steak frites. The rich sauce consists of chicken liver, shallots, butter, and mustard and pairs perfectly with the crispy thin cut french fries. Needless to say, if you’re looking for a super classic version of French steak frites, L’entrecote is your place. .
Ernesto’s
Photo: Alexa MatthewsWe love everything about newcomer Ernesto’s, especially their steak frites or “Bistec con salsa oporto;” it’s a standout dish and one of our favorite steak frites in NYC. This tavern style petit filet is served in a port and foie sauce and is accompanied by addicting, thick cut fries. With a deep Spanish influence and an incredibly savory sauce, this steak frites is not one you want to miss out on.
Bar Boulud
Photo: @peggyeatsBar Boulud is consistently ranked one of the best steak frites in NYC, and we entirely agree. Of course, everything at this Parisian style restaurant is pretty close to perfect, but the steak frites is the dish we always come back for. You’ll get perfectly cooked steak, crispy salted fries, and the choice of three sauces: bearnaise, bordelaise, or au poivre. You can also choose to have your steak as a bavette cut or dry-aged strip.
Balthazar
Photo: @balthazarnyKeith McNally’s Balthazar is, simply put, a New York establishment. This French brasserie specializes in savory French classics, pastries and brunch dishes, so it’s no surprise that their steak frites are one to look out for. With grilled to your liking steak, the best fries in the city (yes, we just said that), creamy sauce and herbed compound butter, we’re literally drooling just thinking about the next time we can eat at Balthazar.
Houseman
Photo: @girleatsnycHouseman has a daily changing menu and features seasonal American food. The steak and fries, with extremely juicy steak, garlic and rosemary fries and a creamy garlicky side sauce to dip is consistently a favorite of ours. This steak is cooked in a cast iron pan, finished in the oven, and the fries are then topped with the juices from the pan.
Boucherie
Photo: @bon_nappetitWith two locations in NYC, Boucherie has quickly become a reliable French Bistro we can count on for classic French cuisine. Known for their great bar and traditional bistro fare, Boucherie also serves fantastic steak frites. The steaks are dry age and the fries are thin cut and extra crispy. Though we could eat a plate of these fries alone, the four peppercorn cream sauce on top of the steak definitely doesn’t hurt.
Raouls
Photo: @johnnyprimeccSince the 1970’s, Raoul’s has served as one of New York’s favorite French bistros serving up classic fare and one of our favorite burgers of all time. Their steak frites, too, is a must order. This large piece of steak is cooked medium rare, pepper crusted and served with a peppercorn sauce. The fries cooked in duck fat make for an indulgent salty side for this pretty perfect steak.
