If you’re anything like us then you crave a good sandwich from time to time, or maybe all the time. Finding the perfect combo is not easy, especially with all the options out there. To help you navigate the sandwich world, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite sandwiches by category.
Italian Hero: Faicco’s
PC: @eatmenycThis family run Italian market is our favorite local spot for authentic Italian heroes. It’s the type of place you know is gonna be awesome as soon as you walk in and smell the pickled peppers and provolone cheese. We recommend the classic Italian Hero with generous amounts of freshly sliced meats and cheeses.
Chicken Parm: Parm
PC: @alexandra.utterThis one’s a no brainer. Roll, hero or platter, Parm makes our favorite chicken (and eggplant parm) in NYC. Layers of melty cheese and creamy sauce are drizzled over juicy pieces of perfectly breaded chicken layered high and covered in more sauce. Drooling yet? Make sure to get a side of spicy rigatoni with your order.
Fried Chicken: BRFC
Bruce and Eric Bromberg know a thing or two about Fried Chicken, so it comes as no surprise that their fast-casual spot dedicated to matzo-meal covered chicken goodness is our favorite in the city. They offer several great fried chicken sandwich options, chicken by the piece and a rotating monthly special. Our favorite here is the Kerry’s Classic made with caramelized pineapple and their special sauce.
Smoked Meat: Katz’s
Katz’s is an iconic NY establishment that’s been serving mile high smoked meat sandwiches since 1888. The Pastrami and Corned Beef are definitely the stars here and are smoked for over 30 days. Complete your meal at Katz’s with a side of fries and matzoh ball soup.
Bagel: H&H Bagel
PC: @osvsanchezsH&H is our all time favorite spot for a quality bagel and schmear. This no-frills UES shop makes their perfect hard-shell-outside, doughy-inside bagels fresh daily and serves them with our favorite Acme Smoked Lox.
Falafel: Taïm
PC: @taimfalafelTaïm is a vegetarian, kosher and mostly vegan fast-casual spot offering locally sourced produce and Israeli-inspired flavors. We recommend the Falafel Sandwich with your choice of fried to order falafel, hummus, Israeli salad, pickled cabbage and tahini all wrapped up in a freshly baked pita.
Po Boy: Cheeky Sandwiches
If you’ve never had a Po’Boy before then 1. you’re seriously missing out and 2. you need to get yourself to Cheeky’s ASAP. This LES sandwich shop makes a mean Shrimp and Oyster Po’Boy with all the fixins.
Murray’s Melt Grilled Cheese: Murray’s Cheese Bar
PC: @murrayscheeseMurray’s Cheese Bar takes grilled cheese to a whole new level. Order the Murray’s Melt Grilled Cheese made with a secret blend of three cheeses and add some crispy bacon or fresh ham. If you’re going for the ultimate meal, pair this buttery and cheesy classic with their steamy tomato soup.
BEC: Estela
PC: @foodmentoWe know this category is especially contentious amongst New Yorker’s, but we have to hand it to Estela for making the best bacon egg and cheese sandwich we’ve ever had. Estela’s BEC is served on a flakey, buttery, poppy croissant toasted with warm lardo and persimmon jam and stuffed with pancetta, a fried egg and fresh avocado to top it all off. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and after you bite into the sandwich and that egg yolk bursts, you’ll totally understand what we’re talking about.
Banh Mi: Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery
PC: @alex_delanyBánh Mì Saigon Bakery is home to some of the most authentic version of this Vietnamese favorite. Our go-to here is the BBQ Pork Banh Mi with steamy pork and pickled veggies on fresh bread.
Chopped Liver: E.A.T
You may or may not know how much we LOVE chopped liver so this one deserves its own category. E.A.T makes our favorite rendition of this sandwich; serving their famous chunky chopped liver on walnut raisin bread.
