Even if you don’t know anything else about us here at EatingNYC, you should know how much we love burgers. They’re versatile, juicy, and there are some darn good ones in this city. A lot of them, at that. Here are our ten favorites, in no particular order:
J.G. Melon
Cheeseburger at J.G. Melon. PC: J.G. MelonThis cash only joint — with locations both in Greenwich Village and on the Upper East Side — is famous for their burgers amongst New Yorkers. Try the bacon cheeseburger with a side of cottage fries for an iconic and delicious choice. If you aren’t convinced about the goodness that is J.G. Melon, ask Gigi Hadid. It’s her favorite burger in the city — and ours too — for good reason.
Emily
The Emmy Burger. PC: Zachary FeldmanThe Emmy Burger, served at Emily, is a creative spin on a dry-aged burger. Topped with Grafton Cheddar, cornichons, charred onions, and “Emmy” sauce–a Buffalo wing and Korean BBQ sauce hybrid–this pretzel bunned burger is top notch.
4 Charles Prime Rib
The “American Cheeseburger” from 4 Charles Prime Rib. PC: Sara ZornOpened by the same people responsible for Au Cheval, Chicago’s most popular burger spot, 4 Charles Prime Rib proves that that reign is well-deserved. You can’t go wrong with the “American Cheeseburger” at this West Village restaurant — but make sure to add the farm egg and bacon on top of your dry-aged patty.
Pig Bleecker
The “Bleecker Burger” from Pig Bleecker. PC: Liz ClaymanA burger isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when the word “BBQ” is uttered. However, this rustic yet hip eatery proves that burgers can in fact be served at BBQ restaurants — at least in NYC. Their “Bleecker Burger” has two beef patties on a potato roll with secret sauce, house pickles and fries.
Minetta Tavern
The “Black Label Burger” from Minetta Tavern. PC: Nick SolaresMinetta Tavern, an upscale Greenwich Village restaurant, serves up two burgers. The first is their “Minetta Burger” with cheddar, caramelized onions and fries. The second, and one of the most famed burgers in the city, is their “Black Label Burger,” a prime dry-aged beef burger with caramelized onions and fries. It’s worth the $33. Oh, and it’s pretty safe to say the fries here are our favorite in the city.
Raoul’s
The “au poivre” burger from Raoul’s. PC: Nick SolaresThe burger at Raoul’s, a Parisian bistro in SoHo, is not only one of the juiciest burgers in the city, but it’s one of the most elusive. The “au poivre” burger has a pepper-crusted beef patty, watercress, triple creme cheese, fries and a side of au poivre sauce. They only make 12 burgers each night, all of which need to be ordered at the nine-seat bar and are often gone in an hour or two, so get there early!
Bar Sardine
The “Fedora Burger” from Bar Sardine. PC: Melissa HomThe “Fedora Burger” at this upscale American pub is unlike any other we’ve ever had. Served with smoked cheddar, crispy potatoes — atop the burger — cucumbers and BBQ mayo, it’ll make you forget you were ever considering ordering something else.
Shake Shack
The “ShackBurger” from Shake Shack. PC: Shake ShackThe beauty, well I suppose beauties, of Shake Shack is that their burgers are high-quality, inexpensive and just about everywhere in New York. The “ShackBurger” is a simple one with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce but one that you really can’t go wrong with. Don’t skip out on the crinkle fries, either!
Burger Joint
Cheeseburger and fries from Burger Joint. PC: Burger JointWalking into Le Parker Meridien, this burger spot is certainly not what’s expected. Situated in an immensely upscale hotel, this cash-only, hidden burger counter is worth pulling the curtain — literally — on. The options are relatively limited but what more could you really want aside from a cheeseburger with the works and some good ‘ole fries?
Peter Luger Steakhouse
The “Luger-Burger” from Peter Luger. PC: Robyn LeeYou didn’t think we could make a whole list of our favorite NYC burgers and not include Peter Luger, did you? Served until 3:45pm daily, the “Luger-Burger” is over ½ of meat on a bun with fries and/or with cheese and bacon. The cheese and bacon aren’t really choices, though. They are musts, trust us. For a balanced meal, make sure to order the “Holy Cow” hot fudge sundae for dessert.
