As the year comes to a close, we here at EatingNYC like to do a bit of reflecting on the year. That reflecting, of course, involves our favorite food moments of the year. From Pastrami Tacos to top notch burgers, here are our official favorite restaurants of 2017:
Don Angie
PC: Gary HeWe have Scott Tacinelli and Angie Rito to thank for chicken parm pizza and their unforgettable lasagna at Dinner Table which now exists at Don Angie, amongst several other winning dishes including a candy-wrapper-looking, two-toned caramelle pasta. Bring a small group and make sure to order BIG.
4 Charles Prime Rib
The burger at 4 Charles Prime Rib. PC: Nick SolaresWhile 4 Charles Prime Rib does indeed have a delicious prime rib, the burger here is the real stunner. Brandon Sodikoff, also of Chicago’s Au Cheval, makes one of our favorite cheeseburgers in the city. It’s a double-patty beauty. Be sure to order it with an egg and bacon — you can thank us later.
Loring Place
Assortment of food from Loring Place. PC: Loring PlaceLoring Place is an upscale American eatery in Greenwich Village that focuses heavily on seasonal ingredients. We love this restaurant for it’s consistency and stunning interiors. The Baked Ricotta and Grandma Style Pan Pizza are two of our favorites.
The Grill
PC: Christaan FelberLocated in the iconic Seagram Building in Midtown, The Grill is one of the most elegant new restaurant openings of 2017. Major Food Group had big shoes to fill when taking over the space and they did a fantastic job especially with their prime rib. The Seagram Crab Cake and Pasta a la Presse are fantastic choices, as well.
Nur
Mussels at Nur. PC: NurThis Middle Eastern restaurant was definitely one of the hottest openings of the year and has paved the way for the many new middle-eastern restaurants on the horizon. Opened by one of Israel’s most famous chefs — Meir Adoni — the cool yet casual restaurant is unique, refined, and delicious. The smoked eggplant carpaccio, Kubaneh bread, and octopus are all must-orders.
abcV
Cauliflower from abcV. PC: Nick SolaresAs fans of Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s other restaurants, we had high hopes for abcV, and it did not disappoint. The vegan restaurant inside abc carpet is doing great things with vegetables including one of our favorite cauliflower dishes of the year and an irresistible fresh spinach spaghetti.
Cote
PC: CoteWe’ve never quite been to a Korean BBQ restaurant like Cote. It’s upscale and serves some of the highest quality meat we’ve had in the city. Plus, what’s more fun than cooking your own meat on tabletop grills and indulging in some delicious cocktails?
The Loyal
Ice cream sundae from The Loyal. PC: The LoyalThe Loyal, John Fraser’s Bleecker Street American brasserie, is a swanky new addition the West Village. It’s a bit old-school and certainly upscale, which is no surprise coming from the Nix and Dovetail chef. But make sure to order the Loyale With Cheese, their burger. It’s one of the best we’ve had this year. Don’t skip out on dessert either.
Chinese Tuxedo
PC: Grub StreetBuilt in a former opera house on Doyers Street, Chinese Tuxedo re-invents hip Chinese food in an incredible, two-story space, making it the chicest restaurant to open in 2017. Their char siu, braised duck a l’orange spring rolls, and Johnny fried rice are some of our faves from the menu but everything is truly delicious.
Empellon
Octopus taco from Empellon. PC: Empellonlex Stupak has becoming synonymous with contemporary Mexican food in New York. Empellon is his third restaurant — and certainly the fanciest. His amplification of traditional Mexican dishes are endlessly impressive: take his Pastrami Tacos with Mustard Seed Salsa, Crab Nachos with Sea Urchin “Queso,” and Corn Ice Cream Tacos for example. There is a lunch prix-fixe menu in addition to the regular menu, as well, with one starter, taco, and dessert for $38.
