Many NYC restaurants have been experimenting with inventive spins on classic vegetables, with cauliflower slowly but surely making it’s way to center stage. Be it fried, sauteed, or “au poivre,” here are some of our favorite cauliflower dishes around NYC:
the Loyal
Cauliflower au poivre from the Loyal. PC: @eatingnycJohn Fraser’s new Bleecker Street restaurant, the Loyal, serves up a “cauliflower au poivre” with autumn puree and sofrito kale. Vegetables as entrees can run the chance of being a risky choice, but this peppery main staple from the Loyal is worth ordering.
abcv
Roasted cauliflower from abcv. PC: abcvnycAt a place that specializes in creative vegetable dishes, it’s no surprise that Jean-Georges’ ABCv lands on our list for one of our favorite cauliflower dishes. Their rendition, under the “warm & hot” section, is a “half or whole roasted cauliflower, with turmeric-tahini and pistachios.” Order the whole one, trust us. It’ll make you forget that you even considered getting a burger.
Loring Place
Crispy, spiced cauliflower from Loring Place. PC: @loringplacenycThis upscale Greenwich Village eatery focuses on seasonal and fresh ingredients. Their “crispy, spiced cauliflower” is served with lemon jam and chilies. It’s a fried concoction that’s splendidly crispy, sweet, and spicy.
Cafe Clover
Cauliflower Steak from Cafe Clover. PC: clovernewyorkWho knew a cauliflower could be a “steak”? Apparently the chefs at Cafe Clover, a West Village health-oriented restaurant did. And what a good idea it was. Their cauliflower steak is served with romesco, baby kale and pickled florets, proving to be a different spin on the occasionally bland vegetable.
Double Zero
Roasted cauliflower from 00+Co. PC: @anyabaranova85Matthew Kenney’s Double Zero, a vegan (mainly) pizzeria in the East Village, thinks that vegetables are the future of dining. With their versions of pizzas and “not pizzas,” as they call their other dishes, makes that certainly believable. Their “roasted cauliflower” has cannelini beans, salsa verde, and capers.
Freek’s Mill
Cauliflower at Freek’s Mill. PC: @freeksmillFreek’s Mill is an awesome addition to Gowanus’s food scene. Their focus on local and seasonal ingredients comes through with their wood-fired centric menu. Here, they prepare cauliflower with whipped curry tofu and pine nuts.
Chalk Point Kitchen
Whole roasted cauliflower from Chalk Point Kitchen. PC: chalkpointkitchen.comThis SoHo restaurant features two different cauliflower items on its menu, one appetizer and one entree, both of which are worth ordering if you’re in an extra cauliflower-y mood. The appetizer is a “cauliflower flatbread” with cashew “cheese” and vegan truffle aioli. The entree is a “whole roasted cauliflower” with turmeric, coconut milk and vadouvan, fresh herbs, and toasted coconut.
Taïm
Cauliflower Shwarma from Taïm. PC: @taimfalafelFor the first time since opening, Taïm added a new sandwich option, the Cauliflower Shawarma. This “meatless shawarma” utilizes roasted cauliflower with Chef Einat Admony’s shawarma spice blend. It’s new and man oh man, is it good. It’s one of those vegetable dishes that truly makes even meat-lovers choose the veggie option.
