After our recent trip to Venice for the Food & Wine Festival, we’ve been having some serious vongole withdrawal. In case you’re not familiar, Vongole is a traditional Neapolitan dish typically made with spaghetti, garlic and white wine sauce. Here are some of our favorite renditions of the dish, both classic and with a twist, in NYC.
Motorino Pizza
PC: @motorinopizzaWe love all the pizza at Motorino, but we’ve got to hand it to them for making one of the best clam pies in NYC. Motorino’s Cherrystone Clam Pizza is topped with with fior di latte, oreganata butter, lemon, parsley and olive oil and it is absolutely delicious!
Morandi
PC: @morandinycMorandi is one of our favorite Italian spots in the city, so it comes as no surprise that their Vongole is at the top of our list. Like any good Vongole, Morandi makes theirs with super fresh linguine, little neck clams, white wine and green garlic for a tangy finish.
The Clam
PC: @artsandfood_nycThis clam-centric restaurant is located in a cozy and brick-walled building in the West Village. For a Vongole-inspired dish with a twist, go for the grilled white clam pizza made with pickled hot peppers, whipped ricotta and parmesan cheese.
Pizzetteria Brunetti
PC: @nycbookgirlPizzetteria Brunetti is a Neapolitan-style eatery with small plates, wine and of course, brick-oven pizza. The Vongole is their signature pie and is complete with freshly shucked, chopped Long Island clams, garlic-herb butter sauce and fresh parsley – perfection.
Maialino pasta
PC: @maialino_nycLong time favorite Maialino by Union Square Hospitality knows a thing or two about preparing classic Roman specialities and their Spaghetti alle Vongole is no exception. Their traditional preparation of the dish might just be the closest you’ll get to Venice!
Pasquale Jones Pizza
Pasquale Jones is a Nolita staple specializing in wood-fired pizzas, clam za included. This pie has a super thin and crispy crust and is made with fresh clams, broccoli rabe and a creamy white white wine sauce.
Carbone
Yes, Carbone’s spicy rigatoni is all that and then some, but have you tried their Linguine Vongole? Their traditional rendition of this beloved dish is prepared with savory littleneck clams and tossed in a super light white wine sauce.
