Ah, Fried Chicken, the ultimate American comfort food we all crave. While recipes and techniques vary as to how to best season, crust and fry your chicken, the versatility is one of the reasons we just can’t get enough. Whether you prefer your fried chicken served over a fluffy cheddar waffle, or you’d rather feast on spicy chicken out of a bucket served aside buttery biscuits, here is a list of where to get some of the best fried chicken in NYC!
Pies ‘n’ Thighs
PC: @whatgraceeatsSince 2006, Sarah Sanneh and Carolyn Bane have been making some of the best fried chicken this city’s ever seen. Our go-tos here are the Fried Chicken Box with three crispy pieces of chicken, buttermilk biscuit and side and the Fried Chicken Biscuit smothered in hot sauce, honey and (quite literally) a quarter stick of butter.
Charles’ Country Pan Fried Chicken
PC: @nicksolaresCharles’ Country Pan Fried Chicken is Harlem soul food that makes our mouth and our stomach rejoice. The chef, Charles, learned to cook in rural North Carolina from his mother who taught him the secret of perfectly fried chicken. Their buttermilk and egg wash chicken is seasoned three times while it’s being fried and is served in giant cast-iron pans. Needless, to say, dining here is truly a spiritual experience.
Blue Ribbon
Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken is an ideal option for all things fried chicken. New Jersey brothers Eric and Bruce Bromberg know a thing or two about seasoning chicken to perfection: egg whites, matzo meal and a special, secret blend of seasoning. We love ordering fried chicken by the piece here and of course their classic fried chicken sandwiches, with specials rotating monthly. You can also get their fried chicken at some of their other spots like Blue Ribbon Sushi and Brasserie.
Sweet Chick
PC: @sweetchicklifeSweet Chick is a more recent addition to the Williamsburg neighborhood offering a unique take on classic Southern Comfort food. Their Fried Chicken and Waffles are seasoned to perfection with your choice of classic, bacon-cheddar, dried cherry, rosemary mushroom, apple cinnamon or spiced pecan waffle. For a unique take on the fried chicken and waffles, try The General: fried chicken with general tso’s sauce, and a rice and broccoli waffle. Best part? They’re open till 2AM.
Root & Bone
Sweet Tea Brined Fried Chicken, perfectly dressed with a hot sauce and honey sauce is what you can expect at Chef Jeff McInnis and Chef Janine Booth East Village spot, Root & Bone. Here, you can also pair their perfectly fried chicken with cheddar waffles for the ultimate comfort meal.
The Commodore
PC: infatuationStarted by Stephen Tanner of Pies n’ Thighs, The Commodore is a fried chicken paradise located in Williamsburg. The Fried Chicken Plate is everything you ever could have dreamed of, piled high with three crispy chicken thighs and warm biscuits. Do yourself a favor and make sure to order yourself a Commodore cocktail, their take on a pina colada prepared with an amaretto float.
Shake Shack
Shake Shack is the burger joint we all know and love, but what most don’t know is that it started as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park. Fresh off the menu since 2015, is their Chick n’ Shack sandwich – crispy chicken breast piled high with lettuce, pickles, and buttermilk herb mayo and it is hands down one of the best chicken sammies in the game.
Bob-White
PC: grubstreetBob-White is an East Village eatery specializing in fried chicken and biscuits. The “Bobwhite” is a quail native to Virginia, named after the owners hometown where he grew up on this southern classic. Here, you can’t go wrong with their Fried Chicken Boxes, paired with one of their specialities, tomato pudding.
