Eating out in this city can get pretty pricey, even when you’re just looking for a casual and somewhat healthy weeknight dinner, which for us, happens to be quite often. If you’re feeling us, keep reading for some of our go-to spots for a convenient and healthy-ish meal.
Dez
Dez just opened this summer and has quickly become one of our favorite options for a healthy lunch or dinner. Brought to us by Samantha Wasserman of ESquared Hospitality and Chef Personality Eden Grinshpan, this quick-casual Nolita restaurant offers salads, mezze, pita sandwiches, and great vibes all for under $20.
Kish Kash
Einat Admony recently opened Kish-Kish, named after the the wooden machine used to make hand rolled couscous, which is exactly what you’ll find at this West Village eatery. As expected, the hummus and freshly baked challah are unparalleled. Other favorites here include the chicken tagine and short rib.
Chikarashi
Hawaiian Poke meets Chirashi at this trendy quick-casual spot with locations in Chinatown and Nomad. We love Chikrashi because of their incredibly high quality fish with options ranging from spicy salmon to toro and uni, served over fresh, warm rice.
Samesa
Max and Eli Sussman put a modern spin on traditional mediterranean fare at Samesa. This Williamsburg spot serves top quality food with bold flavors to match. Some highlights here include their chicken shawarma, the lentil pistachio dip and za’atar chicken wings.
Egg Shop
PC: @mollytavolettiWe love Egg Shop for all things, well, egg. Husband and wife duo Sarah Schneider and Demetri Makoulis along with Chef Nick Korbee are behind this Nolita restaurant, which makes for a great dinner option. Start your meal here with the Mushroom Toast and choose between the Crispy Cauli or The Egg Chop Shop if you’re looking for a healthier option.
Blake Lane
PC: @phoebechdSuzanna Beall combines farm-to-table fare with California style dishes at her Upper East Side restaurant Blake Lane. The name was inspired by the street Beall grew up on in Alabama, and the colorful food here is prepared by former Casa Mono chef Diego Moya. With a variety of veggie bowls and healthy snacks to choose from, all $25 and under, you’ll be sure to leave here with a happy stomach and wallet.
Westbourne
All-day cafe and restaurant, Westbourne, is one of the best new openings of 2018, so it comes as no surprise that this Soho spot is our go-to for a weeknight meal. Favorites here include the Sullivan Chopped Salad and the Rainbow Bowl.
Seamore’s
PC: Seamore’sSeamore’s offers locally sourced fish with great prices to match, making it a reliable option for your next weeknight meal. Our order? The daily reel, which includes your choice of fish from the “daily landings” and three hearty sides for $24. We’re also obsessed with their tuna poke prepared with ponzu, peanut and avocado.
KazuNori
PC: @roycegordonAt Nozawa Group’s handroll spot, Kazunori, guests can choose between three, five, or eight handrolls, for about $7 a pop; a great price point for quality sushi. Must orders here are the blue crab and spicy scallop.
12 Chairs
PC: @NadavHavakookThis reasonably priced Mediterranean spot offers a little something for everyone. At 12 Chairs, they fly in their pita, spices, pickles, labneh cheese and tahini straight from Israel. Whatever you go with, make sure to have an order of cauliflower and hummus on your table.
