When it comes to pizza, New York City does not mess around. While we’re known for the very traditional triangle slice, many square slices have been winning the hearts of millions over the years, so there are definitely some new favorites in town. Here we have compiled 12 of our favorite squares in NYC.
Enjoy!
Mama’s Too
PC: @EatingnycIt’s hard to put Mama’s Too pizza into its own category because it is a combination of many different styles. Many explain it as detroit style, but not quite. This slice is special for many reasons, but mainly because of the way they perfectly burn the edges (in the best way possible). With over ten different square to choose from such as the Angry Nonna pie topped with hot Soppressata, aged mozzarella, Calabrian chili oil and hot honey, Mama’s Too really has something for everyone.
Marinara Pizza
PC: @EatingnycMarinara Pizza is a slice shop dishing out some crazy combinations ranging from the MVP made with marinara, vodka, and pesto sauce to the spinach and artichoke slice. Our go-to here is the spicy pepperoni with a cheese stuffed crust. How can this already delicious slice loaded with pepperoni cups get better? Add melty, gooey cheese inside the crust, that’s how.
Lions Tigers & Squares
PC: @EatingnycLions Tigers and Squares is a project by Francis Garcia, founder of Artichoke Pizza. Here, they specialize in Detroit Style pizza, baked to perfection in sheet pans. They offer squares such as sausage and onion all the way to a mustard pie.
Emmy Squared
PC: @EatingnycThis true Detroit style pizza spot founded by Matthew and Emily Hyland is creating pies out of the ordinary, and they are incredibly good. Their best seller, The Colony, is topped with Ezzo pepperoni, pickled jalapeños, and drizzled with honey. Other favorites here include: The Emmy topped with banana peppers, red onion, ranch, side sauce and The Hatchback topped with Zia hatch chilies, chorizo, crema.
Prince St Pizza
PC: @EatingnycLocated in the heart of NoLita, Prince Street Pizza is best known for their Spicy Spring slice. This famous slice is piled high with loads of thick cut pepperoni cups perfectly complimenting the gooey cheese and fra diavolo sauce. We’re also obsessed with the vodka slice, a sleeper item that we think is just as good
Adrienne’s Pizza Bar
PC: @EatingnycAdrienne’s pizza bar serves old fashioned square pies (no slices), which is most similar to a “grandma” style pie. Located on the famous Stone Street in FiDi, this spot has been around for over 15 years and is a can’t miss if you’re in the area. For their classic margarita, expect a very thin, crispy crust, with crushed tomatoes, garlic and homemade fresh mozzarella, all topped with parmesan cheese.
L&B Spumoni Gardens
PC: @EatingnycArguably New York’s best square comes from L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn. L&B serves this pie a little different than most other squares – they apply the cheese directly onto the thick crust and then finish it off with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese. With each bite you get a perfectly crisp, crunchy, and moist tomatoey dough – it is pure perfection!
Di Fara
PC: @EatingnycDi Fara’s Pizza is definitely an OG on this list, as it’s been around since 1965. They are best known for their round pie, but be sure not to miss out on the Sicillian. Flavorful tomato sauce covered in a three cheese blend, tons of fresh cut basil and a healthy drizzle of olive oil sitting on top of a thick, crispy crust.
Rizzo’s
PC: @weheartastoriaRizzo’s, located in Astoria serves up a square slice that is on the thinner side. With the delicious sauce applied edge to edge covered with cheese all on top of a crispy crust, you may be eating a few more slices than you originally wanted. But hey, the more pizza, the better, right?
Corner Slice
PC: @EatingnycCorner Slice in the Gotham West Market was created by Ivan Ramen’s, Ivan Orkin. The fan favorite at Corner Slice is the tomato slice, a lighter slice prepared with roasted garlic and fresh oregano filled tomato sauce. This is the perfect place to drop by and grab a fresh, delicious slice!
Rosa’s
PC: @EatingnycThis family owned spot has been around since 1975 with locations in Williamsburg and Brooklyn. Here, they offer an incredible upside down slice reminiscent to the beloved L&B. With the melty cheese applied directly to the crust and then fresh sauce pooled on top, this slice achieves the perfect gooey cheese- sweet sauce-crispy crust ratio. While this is their most popular slice, they do offer others such as: The Sfinicione with onions & breadcrumbs (no cheese), which is just as delicious!
Artichoke Basille’s Pizza
PC: @EatingnycSince opening in the East Village back in 2004, Artichoke Pizza has expanded to 12 locations across the country. Originally famous for their artichoke pie, a very hearty slice topped with Artichoke Hearts, Spinach, Cream Sauce, Mozzarella and Pecorino Romano Cheese, the square vodka and classic sicilian slices are the ones that keep us coming back on the reg.
