Believe it or not, 2018 is already half way over and dozens of restaurants have come and gone. We, however, would like to highlight the best restaurants that are here to stay. From the homemade smoked salmon at La Mercerie to the Simit Shlomo Platter at Studio Cafe, here are our favorite restaurants to open so far in 2018:
Westbourne
This California-style all day cafe opened earlier this year on Sullivan Street and offers fresh and healthy bites like a Rainbow bowl filled with basmati rice, falafel and kale and avocado toast on fresh focaccia bread. Best? Chef Camilla Marcus is committed to donating a part of all profits to fight poverty.
Fausto
Restauranter Joe Campanale and former L’Artusi Chef Erin Shambura bring us Fausto, a rustic Italian eatery in Park Slope. From the cozy wooden tables to the homemade pasta and appetizers, Fausto is an all around great dining experience. Reminiscent of L’Artusi favorites, be sure to order the slow poached egg, the bucatini nero and the tagliatelle with lamb shank ragu.
La Mercerie
Brought to us by Stephen Starr, La Mercerie is an all-day cafe and restaurant located inside of the Roman and Williams Guild in Soho. Chef Marie-Aude Rose offers elevated French fare with great options for brunch, lunch and dinner. FYI: We rated their homemade smoked salmon as one of the Hot Now Top five dishes to try right now!
Tokyo Record Bar
PC: @onemoredishTokyo Record Bar offers a lot more than great food, it’s the type of dining experience NYC has been longing for. Here, guests get to help curate the soundtrack for the evening from a selection of great oldies. The modest basement in Greenwich Village only offers two small seatings per night with a fixed, seven-course tasting menu. The menu changes regularly but you can expect your meal here to involve fresh seafood and end with some deliciously cheesy pizza.
Ferris
PC: @noahfeckisawesomeChef Greg Proechel of Le Turtle brings us a New American restaurant located in the Made Hotel. With offerings like Okinawa Sweet Potatoes and charred broccolini there is a bit of a Japanese flare, but Proechel does a great job of contrasting different flavors to bring you a delicious and unique dining experience. Pro Tip: We recommend grabbing a seat at the chef’s counter.
Studio
The Studio Cafe by Gabe Stulman is located inside of the Freehand Hotel in Gramercy and offers North African fare with a modern twist. They’re doing great things at this all day restaurant with dishes like the Simit Shlomo Platter made with a fresh Jerusalem Bagel, Labne, z’atar, smoked char and a hard boiled egg.
Chez Ma Tante
We are so excited about the opening Chez Ma Tante, an unassuming Canadian-inspired restaurant in Greenpoint. Hugue Dufour of M. At Chez Ma Tante, Wells and Johnathan Waxman of Barbuto bring you excellent dishes like the salmon gravlax with sesame and creme fraiche and some of the best pancakes we’ve had in awhile.
Legacy Records
PC: @legacyrecordsnycLegacy Records, the newest venture brought to us by the team behind Charlie Bird and Pasquale Jones, offers Mediterranean cuisine in Hudson Yards. The stunning space was designed by renowned San Francisco decorator Ken Fulk who has received acclaim from both Vogue and Architectural Digest for his work in this space. As for the food, we recommend starting with the mozzarella or prosciutto and going for the dry aged ribeye, which is fantastic.
