Hola! I just returned from my trip to Mexico City and officially feel like a taco…maybe more like a burrito. There was a ton of ground to cover from street tacos to churros, mezcal bars and tasting menus. For simplicity, I’ve narrowed down this guide to include our favorites of the trip along with the most recommended spots and then broke them down by meal. If you have any additional questions feel free to get in touch with me via email: alexa@eating.nyc.
Breakfast Spots
Lalo!: LA vibes in Mexico City? Yes please. If you get anything here, go for the chilaquiles. I’m also not not going to tell you to get the bagel and lox because it was incredibly good too.
El Cardenal: This spot feels like a traditional family diner, so go get here early if you plan to go on a weekend. Expect authentic Mexican hot chocolate and Mexican breakfast featuring all the huevos.
Panderia Rosetta: This spot is owned by the same people behind behind Rosetta, ranked one of the top 50 best restaurants in South America. It’s the perfect place to stop in before a day of site-seeing to fuel up with some carbs.
Honorable Mentions: Finesse, Maison Belen.
Street Tacos
Los Cocuyos: Our favorite tacos of the trip. It’s all good, but make sure to get at least one campechano!
Guerro: Truly side of the road tacos and definitely up there on the list. We loved the Al Pastor here.
Taqueria Orinoco: Another must try – chicharróns tacos FTW.
El Turix: They offer tacos and tortas filled with cochinita pibil.
Honorable Mentions: El Califa, Meche y Rafael, Taquería Los Parados, Hipodromo Condesa, El Vilsito, Tacos Manolo, El Rey del Taco.
Lunch/Dinner
Pujol : Book far in advance (As early as three months). We did the regular tasting but heard great things about the taco omakase as well, so take whatever reservation you can get. If you do the classic tasting, I would recommend going for the seafood option. It was definitely an unforgettable experience and felt pretty awesome to dine at #12 on top 50 restaurants in the world.
Contramar: Great for lunch or dinner, just be prepared for a huge meal and make sure you save room for at least one dessert dessert.
Maximo Bistro: This farm to table European restaurant with a Mexican twist definitely felt the most New York; it was super packed, scene-y and upscale. Must orders: jamon, onion dip and rigatoni pasta.
Rosetta: One of the most charming restaurants I’ve ever been to, it feels like you’re dining in someone’s living room. As for food – pasta, pasta, pasta! Our favorites were the chicken liver pappardelle and the linguine.
Meroma: Low key vibes and upscale dining. Basically the most ideal date night spot.
Dessert
Churrería El Moro: CDMX’s OG Churro spot serving up churros in all forms – ice cream sandwiches, churros with hot chocolate, churros with condensed milk dipping sauce, etc. They have a few locations so plan to go as much as you can.
Neveria Roxy : For the best ice cream. Get the mango and passionfruit snow.
